Food dye experiments

We experimented with different colors of food dye in a glass of water, watching the dye make swirls in the water, and then adding other colors to see what would happen.

Mosaic Art

Zeke loved making the train mosaic so much that we repeated this week with a rainbow.

Rainbow Books

Noah's Ark by Jerry Pinkney

There are many many childrens' versions of Noah's Ark, and few of them are good. This one, however, is a true keeper. Stunningly illustrated, the scenes are full of realistic animals and beautiful landscapes, but never chaotic. And the graceful prose fills the plot with gorgeous detail but doesn't differ from the bible version, or add new, superfluous characters.

The Gift of Driscoll Lipscomb by Sara Yamaka

A little girl receives a pot of paint from an adult artist friend in a single color at each birthday, starting with her 4th. As her palette expands, so does her understanding of the beauty of the world. Illustrated in a loose impressionistic style this is a very sweet and quiet book.

Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert

This far from Spring, I was happy to see any book about planting. And this one did not disappoint. As it took us thru the yearly cycle of planning, planting, waiting, and picking flowers we gasped in delight at the bold, bright, collages.

Rainbow Song

The Rainbow

One day the sun was shining bright
(hold up hand like blocking sunlight)
But some clouds came along and it became black as night
(hold up other hand for the clouds)
Then the rain began to sprinkle onto the ground
(wiggle fingers for the rain coming down)
And soon it was raining all over the town.
But when the clouds had passed on by
(move both hands to one side)
A big beautiful rainbow stretched across the sky
(make a rainbow arc with your hands)

Rise and Shine

The Lord said to Noah
there's gonna be a floody floody
